This Endowment Fund was established in 2007 by contributions from CMA President Anmol S. Mahal, MD and wife Surjit K. Mahal, MD. The award was named in honor of Dr. Mahal's father, Adarsh S. Mahal, MD, one of the earliest physicians in India to be fully trained in psychiatry. Adarsh S. Mahal, MD spent his career teaching and training many upcoming psychiatrists despite the profession's taboo reputation at the time.
The purpose of the Fund is to honor an individual or organization that has shown extraordinary interest and demonstrated efforts leading to a significant contribution towards improving access to health care or reducing disparities in health care in California consistent with the mission of the CMA Foundation, which is:

The Guidelines for the Leadership Achievement Award
are:
- The Adarsh S. Mahal, MD Access to Health Care and Disparities Endowment Fund
supports an annual award to be made by the CMA Foundation
Board of Directors.
- The Annual Honoree will be provided a plaque, an honorarium (if appropriate) and the expenses for the Honoree to attend the event honoring the awardee.
- The Award shall be given to a person or organization that the CMA Foundation identifies as making an important contribution towards improving access to health care or reducing disparities in health care in California consistent with the mission of the CMA Foundation.
- Funds added to this dedicated Endowment will increase the amount available for the Annual Award.
- The initial gift of $10,000 will be invested for long-term growth and protection of the fund, contributions can be added to the Fund.
- The Award will be given in conjunction with the CMA Foundation Annual Awards Leadership Recognition Dinner or a similar event organized by the CMA Foundation such as a meeting of the CMA Foundation Members (the CMA Board of Trustees).
- Nominations will be solicited from the CMA Foundation Board of Directors, the CMA Foundation Members, and the CMA Foundation Staff, the CMA and its Staff, the CMA and its officers and staff, the CMA affiliated organizations, and from the public, as determined by the CMA Foundation Board of Directors.
- Nominations will be submitted to the CMA Foundation CEO with appropriate information to support the nomination, and the material will be submitted to the CMA Foundation Program Committee for selection of the Award winner three months in advance of the date the award is to be given.
List of Past Honorees
2007: Kwabena Adubofour, MD was recognized for his exceptional work to curb disparities in diabetes health care in the in San Joaquin Valley. Dr. Adubofour has championed prevention and wellness strategies for diverse populations for more than a decade and has spoken on this topic to colleagues, hospital administrators, patients and the public.
