Gary F. Krieger, MD Memorial Fund

During more than 30 years of practice, Dr. Krieger had been a vigorous advocate of Medi-Cal. He worked hard to ensure patient access and physician interest in the program.

A resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, he served as a delegate to the American Medical Association and chairman of the governing council of the AMA's Organized Medical Staff Section. He was CMA's Speaker of the House since 1997 and Vice Speaker in 1994-95. He was LACMA president in 1987-88 and chaired LACMA's Board of Trustees in 1990-91.

Born in New York on December 7, 1940, Dr. Krieger received his medical degree from the University of Chicago in 1965 and attended USC.

Always a patient advocate, he urged other physicians to put their patients first, regardless of interference from managed care or the government.

"The bottom line and the motivation for everything I do will be our patients," he stated in an interview with LACMA Physician Magazine upon becoming president of the county medical association, "whatever is placed before you, ask if it is in the best interest of the patient. If it is, fight for it. If it is not, do all you can to prevent it.

Dr. Krieger's wife, "Bunny" (Rochelle) helped managed his pediatric practice and his children became physicians. Jeffrey, a gastroenterologist, Lori, a pediatrician who has taken over her father's practice.

The Gary F. Krieger, MD Memorial Fund focuses grant making around issues involving children and/or young physicians - two of the priorities in his busy life.
