Steven M. Thompson Access to Care Internship Program

Steve Thompson believed in access to care for all Californians. His lifelong passion was to see that health care was available to all who needed quality medical care. To this policy end, Steve wanted to provide a foundation of research by which sound public policy could be affected in the state of California.

The California Medical Association has established the Steven M. Thompson Access to Care Internship Program in honor of Steve's 40-year career dedicated to health care policy and his passion for improving access to medical care in California.

"The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions."

- Alfred Lord Tennyson

The Steven M. Thompson Access to Care Internship Program is part of the CMA Foundation, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) entity. All contributions to this program are used to fund an ongoing internship program. The internship program will be located in the CMA's Center for Government Relations and is open to all qualified undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing research related to access to care in medically underserved areas in California.

"His passion for health care is like none other that we have ever seen. His knowledge of health care is like none other that we have ever seen. He was a premier legislative advocate, and did for the California Medical Association what we want legislative advocates to do for all of their organizations, and that is to help guide them to move beyond their special interests."

Senator Jackie Speier, during a legislative tribute to Steve Thompson held on the Senate floor.
