Medical Student Mini Grant Program

2001-2002 Medical Student Community Leadership Grants
Children's Health Hut
The Children's Health Hut, coordinated by UCSF medical students, provides free interactive health screening exams and fun health-related activities for children. In addition, the Children's Health Hut provides an important avenue for improved health education and outreach to underserved communities by increasing access to health and awareness of the Healthy Families Program.

Chicano/Latino Medical School Association Statewide Conference
U.C. Davis School of Medicine students helped coordinate the CMSA Statewide Conference. The conference reached out to underrepresented and disadvantaged high-school students and premedical undergraduates from both community college and four-year institutions. The conference fostered an awareness of Latino health issues and provided motivation and guidance for careers in medicine.

Lunch Time Elective: Nuts and Bolts of Medicine
UC Davis Medical Students will provide a series of lectures to address some of the practical aspects of their chosen profession. Topics for the lectures include: "What will you choose, Groups or Solo Practice?": "Domestic, child and elder abuse…What you need to know" and "Understanding professional liability insurance".

Alhambra High School Mentoring Program
The USC Chapter of Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association will provide high school students in the Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program with a mentor that can help them with the rigors of high school and better prepare them for college. The 44 high school students are paired with a mentor who is responsible, enthusiastic and genuinely concerned in fostering a strong relationship.

Garcia Leadership Development Seminar
The aim of the UCLA Chicano/Latino Medical Student Association is to cultivate and advance the leadership skills of young medical student leaders who are interested in serving the Latino Community. The workshop provides a formal environment to teach and develop the leadership skills necessary for medical student leaders as future physician leaders.

Tobacco - Gambling With Your Life
A meeting designed to teach medical students how to implement and run tobacco prevention and tobacco cessation programs in their communities. The tobacco prevention portion is modeled after Florida's PIPSA program. The cessation program is modeled after a highly successful program at UCSF.
