California Osteoporosis Project
Osteoporosis was selected as the next focus of the Women's
Health Initiative after soliciting the input of our Advisory
Committee and our conference attendees, as well as reviewing
the relevant literature. In making our decision on where our
abilities may be best utilized, we balanced need, existing
resources and statewide partnership possibilities. The project
will increase osteoporosis awareness, including prevention
and treatment, in California, encourage collaboration between
physicians', women's and senior's organizations and improve
physician-patient relationships through our work.
Priorities for the California Osteoporosis Project include:
- Improving the physician/patient relationship
- Educating physicians regarding the prevalence, prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis
- Affecting public policy
- Promoting public awareness around prevention and treatment
of osteoporosis
The California Osteoporosis Project is consistent with the goal
of the California Women's Health Initiative to improve the health
of women by:
- Improving communication between physicians and their
women patients.
- Increasing collaboration between physician organizations,
women's organizations, consumer groups and government agencies.
- Enhancing physicians' knowledge regarding gender differences
in medicine and healthcare.
- Empowering patients to be proactive in their health decision-making.
- Enhancing the role of office staff and allied health professionals
to help patients navigate and best utilize the health system
and resources in their communities.
