This award was established in 1997 in honor of Robert D. Sparks, MD, the first President & CEO of the CMA Foundation. Dr. Sparks’ outstanding service to the medical profession has included the position of President of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, Vice President of Syntex Corporation, Dean of the Tulane University School of Medicine, and Chancellor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Qualifications: This award honors and individual or organization that has demonstrated outstanding concern for the health of communities in a manner consistent with the mission of the CMA Foundation: The CMA Foundation champions improved individual and community health through a partnership of leaders in medicine, related health professions, and the community.
The award recipient may be a person or organization from any role (not just physicians) that has been identified as making an important contribution consistent with the mission of the CMA Foundation.

The CMA Foundation and the Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations (NEPO) will honor an ethnic physician for his or her outstanding leadership contributions
to ethnic communities. The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding physicians, inspire other physicians, and promote leadership, caring, and compassion in medicine.
The recipient selected will be judged by the following criteria:

Is an outstanding leader to ethnic communities

Has contributed greatly to the public’s health

Embodies one or more of the goals of NEPO:
- Advancing diversity in the physicians workforce
- Eliminating health disparities
- Addressing access to care
- Improving cultural competency and patient advocacy
- Is a resident of California
Nominations will be accepted from individuals and organizations.

The Adarsh S. Mahal, MD Access to Health Care Award was established with funds from CMA President Anmol S. Mahal, MD and wife Surjit K. Mahal, MD. The award was named in honor of Dr. Mahal’s father, Adarsh S. Mahal, who spent his career working to improve access to mental health care in India.
The purpose of this award is to honor an individual or organization that has shown extraordinary interest and demonstrated efforts leading to a significant contribution toward improving access to health care or reducing disparities in health care in California consistent with the mission of the CMA Foundation:
The CMA Foundation champions improved individual and community health through a partnership of leaders in medicine, related health professions, and the community.
The award recipient may be a person or organization from any role (not just physicians) that has been identified as making an important contribution consistent with the mission of the CMA Foundation.
